The Area
The Castelli Romani (“Castles of Rome”) is the name given to the group of
communes in the province of Rome. They are located a short distance
south-east to Rome, at the foot of the Alban Hills. The area of the
Castelli occupies an ancient, fertile volcanic area, which has allowed for
flourishing agriculture since ancient times. The large crater is filled
with two lakes, the Lake of Nemi and the Lake Albano.
For centuries this has been an area frequented by Romans. Noblemen of
ancient Rome traveled to these hills for their fresh climate during the summer
months. The tradition was followed by the Pope, who still has a summer
residence in Castel Gandolfo, on Lake Albano. Historic families who have
ruled in the castelli include the Orsini, Colonna, Chigi, Aldobrandini, and
Ruspoli. The cool climate, breathtaking views of the lakes, and the
fertile fields have transformed this place into a holiday resort for visitors
from all backgrounds, as demonstrated by some wonderful villas and palaces.
Guests of Palazzo Romano will appreciate the characteristic mild winters and
cool summers, in addition to the ability to reach the capital city in as little
as 25 minutes by train. Palazzo Romano is a perfect place for those who
want to visit Rome during the day and retreat to a quiet paradise each
afternoon. Many side trips are possible including those related to the
region’s nature, food, and history. The area is renowned for the
production of excellent wines, including the white wine of Frascati and the
Castelli Romani. There is a nearby archaeological park consisting of many
acres of forests and fields, as well as the ruins of the villa of Emperor
Tiberius, an ancient amphitheater, the spectacular Tusculum Theatre and a
2,600-year-old cistern.
