Renting on a nightly or weekly basis, this studio apartment in the red house high on the hill
in Manarola offers stupendous views of the blue Mediterranean Sea. The freshly painted window
shutters diffuse the light and the sound of the waves lapping to shore rock you
to sleep.
This is what you will experience at Ondina, a bright and pleasant apartment on
the second floor of a beautiful house that overlooks the water. Ondina has been
recently restored in a crisp and tasteful manner by the current owners who are
architects. Much attention and respect has been given to the integrity of the
building origins and the environment.
Ondina, an attractive studio apartment that sleeps 2-3 guests (330 sq. feet in
size), is characterized by two impressive French windows that offer an
outstanding
sea view. The apartment is fully functional with living/sitting area with
a double bed, one
comfortable single divan couch, satellite TV, small and well equipped kitchen and
bathroom with shower and hair dryer.
The Ondina owner also offers
Casa Gialla
with four independently rented double bedrooms located just a few doors down
from Ondina.
Ondina is characterized by remarkable sea views over the Cinque Terre National
Park coastline and the Manarola harbor. This area of Manarola and its buildings
formed the most important part of a local medieval castle that was built in the
10th century and destroyed by battleships fleets from Genoa in the fifteenth
century. Over the centuries this point was continually raided by pirates.
With the destruction of the castle in the 1400's, the main building remained in
ruins with little standing other than the thick medieval stone walls and arches
on the ground floor. Because of its enviable perched position, there are a fair
amount of stairs to reach the property. The owners, Debora (who speaks
excellent English) and Oriana are very helpful and accommodating.
Manarola, being one of the more sleepy
villages of the Cinque Terre, is a peaceful and quiet haven after a busy day of
sightseeing. There are restaurants, shops and cafés in the village and the
harbor is particularly picturesque and inviting.
Manarola is the second southernmost village of the Cinque Terre and hiking
trails offering spectacular views link all of the five Cinque Terre villages.
The easiest walkway will be between Riomaggiore, the first village, and Manarola.
This famous trail is called Via dell'Amore and makes this beautiful area
accessible to everyone on foot. The path is also handicap accessible.
Manarola is connected to Corniglia, the next village up, also by a footpath.
All of the Cinque Terre towns and other destinations along the Ligurian Coast
are accessible by frequent boat and train service. A car is the least
desirable mode of transportation. The winding mountainous roads take a long
time to navigate, reminding us of the fact that boats, trains and walking are
the most natural way to enjoy this remarkable region.
