The Aragon Castle, the most impressive historical monument of Ischia,
stands on a volcanic rock connected to the island by a bridge built in
1438 by Alfonso of Aragon. The Castle, which overlooks the vast beauty
of the sea, was originally built as a fortress in 474 BC by Gerone of
Siracusa. After a long period of abandonment, the Aragon Castle
reached its golden period during the fourteenth century. Under the
Aragonese dynasty, it became a political, cultural and spiritual center
under the Renaissance court of the noble poet Vittoria Colonna.
This unique location houses a small chic hotel and three independent
accommodations, each with spectacular views.
Inside the gates of the castle guests will find churches, courtyards,
antique archways, terraces, gardens and arcades with outstanding views
of the sea, the peninsula, the harbor of Ischia.
The Campanile
apartment sleeps four people in one double bedroom and one twin
bedroom, both with air-conditioning. There are two bathrooms with
showers. The large living room has a well-equipped kitchenette
and a panoramic terrace. The terrace has been nicely furnished
and is ideal for al fresco meals overlooking the sea. The apartment is
fully air-conditioned.
We also offer the
Canonica
Maggiore apartment (sleeps 2) near the Campanile
apartment. Additionally, please ask about Canonica Minore,
our smallest castle accommodation.
The
Aragon Castle apartments can be combined to accommodate up to eight
guests – please inquire for more information about discounted price.
An elevator connects the entrance of the Castle to the top, approx. 80
m above sea level, where the apartment is situated. The apartment has
its own independent entrance through an ancient courtyard. The unit has
recently been renovated by the owner, the son of a famous artist, whose
paintings grace the apartment walls. All the windows and outdoor
spaces have unforgettable views. Apartment guests enjoy many hotel
services from the adjacent hotel including use of their porter,
concierge services and hotel terrace dining. The hotel concierge
can give invaluable help in booking ferries to nearby Capri or Naples
or renting cars or scooters, as well as information about Ischia's
local attractions. The entire Castello can sleep up to 40 people,
and can be rented for weddings and other special events.
Check availability
Please note that the castle is perched on a hill, and is therefore not
recommended for guests with walking difficulties. In addition, we
don’t encourage guests to bring their cars onto the island because of
the difficulty in finding parking. The frequent bus and taxi
services make it easy to get around the island without a car. A
scooter can be rented if desired. A transfer service, such as from the
airport or train station to a taxi at the Ischia waterfront to the
castle, is highly recommended and should be prearranged. Advance
grocery shopping is also available for a small fee.
From Easter to the end of October, a standard first dinner is
included in the restaurant of the hotel.
Ischia, Capri, Procida and Vivara are known as the Partenopean island
of the bay of Naples. Ischia, Procida and Vivara lie to the north of
the gulf, while Capri lies in the south, facing the peninsula of
Sorrento. The typically Mediterranean climate of Ischia is dry
and warm year-round, with temperatures sometimes reaching over 100°F
during the months of July and August. Dominated by Mount Epomeo,
the island is scattered with many other hills, often separated by
valleys and gullies – creating a remarkable landscape. Large
chestnut and oak wood trees enrich the countryside vegetation.
Ischia is about 39 km around and is the largest island in the Amalfi
Coast region. The island is world famous for its natural
thermo-mineral spas and hot springs. The hot baths at Ischia were
a favorite spot of the ancient Romans, and are still popular with
visitors from all over the world. The hot baths at Negombo, in
the Bay of S. Montano, near Lacco Ameno in the north-west of the
island, are particularly chic: the facilities are well cared for and
there are many different pools, as well as an attractive bay. Many of
these baths are surrounded by exceptional flora, such as palm trees and
other tropical flowering trees and bushes. Many baths, such as
Negombo, are open from April to October.
Activities
The incredible cities of Capri, Positano, Pompei, Naples, the
Vesuvio, Procida, Herculaneum, and Paestum are all accessible from the
apartment via various modes of transportation including train and boat.
We highly recommend spending some time exploring the castle.
Unlike guests of the apartments, day visitors to Aragon Castle are
required to buy an admission ticket. There are many offerings of
boat trips around the island with a skipper and his mate. Guests
can also enjoy some fishing, and even catch their own fresh dinner out
of the sea.
The Spadara Vineyards and the Pararazzo Wines of Ischia cellars with
fine wine-tastings are near-by. Guided country walks are
available to discover the most ancient dwellings on the island and the
beautiful La Morterlla Gardens. Guests may also enjoy guided
visits to the Archeological Museum at Villa Arbusto and the
archeological site at Santa Restituta.
