many intellectuals and artists
throughout the years, including Robert Browning, Eugene Benson, Igor
Strawinsky, and Ernest Hemingway. Three famous and unique women
in
history have also enjoyed Asolo. Caterina Cornaro, former Queen
of
Cyprus was exiled to Asolo in 1489 and created there a magnificent
Renaissance court of artists, writers and poets. Eleonore Dusa,
star
of the international theater world, and Freya Stark, explorer, author
and photographer are known for having loved Asolo.
“I assure you that even with the experience I have
had of the
most beautiful landscapes in Italy and elsewhere, I know of nothing
that can compare with the view one enjoys from the tower and the
Queen's palace." Robert
Browning,
in a letter to a friend, Mrs. FitzGerald, 1889.
Culinary Tradition/Wines/Crafts
Guests of Asolo Bello will find Asolo
full of small restaurants that offer unforgettable dishes of the local
culinary
traditions. Asolo is part of the national circuit of Citta
Del Vino
(Wine Cities), and holds festivals
in August with special wine tastings
of its first class wine. Asolan handicrafts have been treasured
for centuries and are
represented in fabrics, embroidery, hand-painted ceramics and antique
furniture. Beautiful vases and finely painted cups are only two
types
of colorful ceramics to be found in the village. One of the
oldest
craft centers is the Tessoria Asolana, a hand-weaving workshop, which
specializes in unique, high-quality fabrics. The Embroidery
School of
Asolo produces gorgeous linens, lace and artistic ornaments.
Antique
markets are a great place to find furniture, pictures and jewelry, and
are situated under the porticoes and in village plazas throughout the
city center. An antiques fair is held every second Sunday
of the
month.
