Elsie Kinghorn Carolan
Aunt Elsie's Journal

Oct 10, 1927.

Up at 7:00 but didn't leave Venice until 10:20.  Mr. Lewis surely wants to get us there on time!  Played bridge on the train.  Arrived in Florence about 5:15 and transferred to the Hotel Stella d'Italia.  Nearly fell over when we found we were given a suite of three rooms!  After dinner we went for a walk.  Most shop windows are covered with burglar and fire proof windows, giving the city a very gloomy appearance.

Florence.  Oct 11, 1927

Out sightseeing at 9:15.  Went first to the Baptistry -- built about 600 AD on ruins of an old pagan temple.  With a few exceptions, everyone in Florence is baptized in this building.  Then went to Cathedral.  Outside is of many colored marble.  Inside is Gothic style, but not so pronounced as Milan.  Built in 14th century.  High mass is said each morning, with clergy separated from the people by glass windows about 6 feet high!

We were in Savonarola Square where he preached against the corruption of the clergy by the de Medicis.  Also went to the old house where Dante was born and raised.
