Jim Broyles
Etruscan Influences

The public beaches on the Bay of Baratti are easily accessible and offer a view of Populonia in the distance.      From here, an interesting assortment of day trips is possible. The beach cities of the Etruscan Coast are within easy reach, including San Vincenzo, the Gulf of Baratti, Follonica, Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia. Be sure to venture up to the ancient Etruscan city of Populonia for the extraordinary views of the sea.

If you are curious about the Island of Elba, drive down to Piombino and take a ferry operated by Mobylines into the city of Portoferraio.

Massa Marittima, with its 13th century duomo, is an uncrowded and scenically magnificent Etruscan city.     Inland day trips should include Volterra, with its restaurants and Etruscan museum, and Massa Marittima, a medieval hill town in the midst of one of Italy's great wine producing regions.

Before we left Querciolaie, Rolando took us through his workshop and sculpture rooms. His new passion is in the creation of works of light that combine sculpture with illumination. He is generous with his photographs and tells us stories about his exhibitions in Brussels and elsewhere.

Rolando's imaginative lamps provide a source of both light and beauty.     If you stay at Querciolaie and Rolando is not there, it is because he has gone off to one of his exhibitions in another city.

It was hard to say good-bye to him, so we promised to come again and stay longer the next time!
