ancient
Cerchi castle which was severely damaged during the war. The

Cerchi family lived in Castello Rufina for several generations in the
twelfth
century, before moving to Florence. In the time of his exile from Florence,
Dante was known to be a guest at the Castello, and he mentions the family in
Canto XVI of Paradiso in The Divine Comedy. The chapel, which is still in
existence, is
dedicated to Blessed Emiliana dei Cerchi, whose mortal remains lie in
the
church of Santa Croce in Florence. The memory of the powerful feudal
dynasty of
the Cerchi still hangs in the air.
