Aunt Elsie's Journal

When our wonderful Aunt Elsie passed away a few years ago, we were given some of her treasure. Among these gifts was a short bookshelf of travel volumes from the early twentieth century. Elsie kept a very careful and reflective travel journal in 1927, and this too was passed on to us in excellent condition. Meticulously preserved with her daily entries are many of the programs, menus, tickets and souvenirs that she accumulated along the way as she ventured from Forsyth, Montana to all the amazing sites of Europe. And also included were these fascinating and dreamlike images taken from her box camera, images that for us inspire more mystery and wonder than the precise digital artifacts we now bring back from our travels in great abundance. We would love to have gone along, if only to see what has changed, and what has remained the same. In this story, we join Elsie for her voyage across the Atlantic, her days in Paris, and the Italy portion of her journey. |

August 31st 1927 ... started to pack our trunk after breakfast. Felt rather tired as we were up late the night before. Frances and Harry gave a farewell dance for us and we had a wonderful time. There was quite a bunch over at the train to say goodbye...Everyone was wonderful to us. It gave me a wobbly feeling inside--as if perhaps we were never coming back to Forsyth... |
