Elsie Kinghorn Carolan

Aunt Elsie's Journal

Rome.  Oct 17, 1927.

Went to 8 o'clock mass with Ethel, Christine and Jimmie.  Saw Father O'Neil and he gave us a letter to present at the Vatican.  Later on we got an invitation to see the Pope at one o'clock Tuesday.

Saw the Sistine Chapel where the Pope is elected.  Many of Michelangelo's paintings are on the walls.  His memory is still worshiped by the Italians.  He was a painter, sculptor, architect, philosopher, poet, tailor and two or three other things.

Rome.  Oct 18, 1927.

Slept late and went to the Vatican about 12:20 to keep our appointment with the Pope.  Borrowed Mrs. Richer's black coat and got a black veil at the Vatican.  We all looked like nuns!  Stood waiting one hour.  Finally a bell rang and the Pope came into the room surrounded by bodyguards and two Cardinals.  Everyone knelt as he came into the room and he walked by each one and let us take his hand and kiss his ring.  Before he left the room he blessed us and the religious articles in our hands.  He was dressed in white with red shoes on.  He is fine looking -- about 58 or 60 years old.
